Unblock GitHub & others

The Issue

To fellow developers & others,

On December 17th, Ministry of Communication and IT, Govt. of India, ordered Indian ISPs to block 32 websites including GitHub, Gists, a SourceForge project, Vimeo and others. This goes against the spirit of our right to freedom. At a time when the Government should be focusing on improving the technology scenario in our country, things like this hamper progress.

A lot of people are intersted in understanding how blocking these (and only these) websites is in favour of national security, and the reason for secrecy. This brings into question the technological prowess of the officials.

Pranesh Prakash, Policy Director at Bangalore's Centre for Internet and Society correctly tweets that "The 69A Rules don't allow for transparency, accountability, time-limits on blocks, etc. So easily misused by govt. + courts + individuals"
