Demand Government Apology for the loss of 99 Crew in Thetis Submarine Disaster 1 June 1939
The Issue
We are approaching the 80th Anniversary of the sinking with the loss of 99 lives on 1st June 1939 of the Submarine Thetis. These deaths could have been avoided by cutting holes in the hull. The admiralty did not permit these holes to be cut as this would have weakened the hull and Thetis was considered vital for the war effort. The subsequent enquiry found that the men were at fault for "failing to escape".
I believe no compensation was ever given to the sailors' families.
It is about time that the Admiralty and / or the UK Government apologised to those men and their families for the inaction which caused their deaths.
There is ample evidence available for this conclusion.
