Bryan Schalch, a 39 year old married teacher, had sex with a 17 year old pupil, but was acquitted at Warwick Crown Court, in November 2017, because the girl attended a different school. Judge David Griffith-Jones QC stated,  "It is no crime for someone simply to have a sexual relationship with another, as long as that other is at least 16, unless the section of the Sexual Offences Act is applicable, namely that there is a breach of trust."

It is essential that teachers and those in positions of trust, understand the vulnerability of the young and never choose to have sexual relations with a minor ( a person under 18). Parents must have confidence that teachers and those in positions of trust will always safeguard minors. The law at present, allows a teacher or a scout leader, social worker, priest, creche worker, tutor, sports coach etc  to have sex with a 16 year old, as long as they do not teach them or hold a position of trust over them. This means a 59 year old teacher, priest, children's worker etc  could have sex with a 16 year old. This is not acceptable.

The law must ban teachers, and those holding positions of trust, from having sex with a minor.
