Nearly four years passed since the Minister of Finance Yair Lapid canceled customs tax on the live imports.

The purpose of the customs cancellation was to reduce the price of fresh meat to the consumer.

What actually happened since the number of animals imported increased almost threefolds, is that the price of fresh meat to the consumer actually increased! And this is in spite of the negative inflation rate!

In 2013, 209 thousand calves and lambs were imported live to Israel. In 2016 Israel imported 572 thousand and in 2017 imported 500 thousand calves and lambs.

Despite the overall increase, the price of fresh meat to the consumer rose!

The government's plan failed, and the suffering of hundreds of thousands of animals doubled and so did the dangers of health and ecological impact to Israel.

Hundreds of thousands of babies are imported every year from distant countries to be slaughtered here. Animals go through hell on those long journeys that can go on, at times for more than three weeks, at sea and in land, in crazy overcrowding, feces-covered conditions, starving and thirsty, suffocating and blinded by the ammonia fumes of the urine, and bringing in sick, wounded, physically and mentally crushed animals.

We call upon the Minister of Finance, Moshe Kahlon: to reinstate the import customs duties on the live animal shipments!

He has the power to return customs and stop subsidies to local growers who are being compensated for imports. It would return a great deal of money to the state, benefit the health of Israel's citizens, benefit the environment and do great kindness to the victims.
