Remove Distressed Foxes and Minks from Inhumane Fur Farm!

The Issue

Let me start by saying that Québec is one of the worst places for animals. They have no rights and there are no regulations to protect them. Basically, an animal is no more than a chair or a toaster.

Recently, there was a complaint about a fur farm in Montérégie. Dozens of foxes and hundreds of mink were kept in what was described as inhumane conditions at a farm where they are being raised for their fur. The mink and foxes are bred, and offspring are gassed or electrocuted, and then pelted.

A veterinarian specializing in wildlife was brought along during the SPCA visit to the farm and had this to comment:

“We had several types of injuries or illness," said veterinarian Sherri Cox. "Dehydration was evident in all 91 foxes. Emaciation or starvation was present in many of the animals. There were a variety of injuries from broken toes, to a broken leg, to a missing eye, lesions on the tails."

“Animals not having access to adequate water, large amounts of excrement, filthy cages... the sort of things that would be outrageous if we saw dogs… wired bottom cages, no access to a solid floor,” said Devine, SPCA director of animal advocacy. “Difficult things to see.”

Some of the foxes on site were humanely euthanized immediately because their condition was dire and they had no chance of recovery.

Even though it was slow to intervene, the Quebec's Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks finally went to inspect the farm. Instead of removing the suffering animals, as we all thought they would do, they "preferred to leave the animals where they were for the time being", said vetenarian Guylaine Segin. They wanted to give a chance to the owner to make it right.

The problem is, the owner, Mr. Jean-Luc Rodier, has faced accusations of animal cruelty and negligence in the past: 262 charges of cruelty to animals and negligence, from which he was found guilty to 32 counts of negligence.

The SPCA had already all planned out. A sanctuary in the United States was ready to take care of the distressed animals, we are only waiting for the "go" from the decision maker.

Please urge the Ministry to take immediate action on this animal abuse case. Animal cruelty on an industrial scale does NOT make it right!

Help give a voice to the most vulnerable.

Thank you all so much for your support.
