Chris Bryant MP has come top of the ballot to introduce his own Private Member’s Bill to Parliament. In the spirit of open democracy, today he has launched an online poll to ask the public which of six issues we think he should address. His promise is that barring any unforeseen events he will introduce one or other of the two that top the poll. Please vote NOW for his Marriage Equality Bill here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5FTGNGW This bill would extend civil partnerships to mixed-sex couples, include mothers’ names on marriage certificates (in addition to fathers’) and allow the use of religious symbols in straight civil weddings (as is allowed in gay civil weddings). Three strikes for fairness and equality! If we can top this poll, we could see a bill for equal civil partnerships debated in Parliament in just a few months’ time. Such a bill would be popular (3 in 5 people support opening civil partnerships to all, according to a 2017 Populus Survey), has a strong chance of becoming law (the bill has cross-party support, including from prominent Conservatives), and would give millions of cohabiting mixed-sex couples and their children legal recognition and financial protection.
