Hello supporters of #equalcivilpartnerships! Well wasn’t Friday 13th January a lucky day for our campaign for mixed-sex civil partnerships? As many of you will have seen, MPs in Parliament debated a Bill which would finally open civil partnerships to all. Though the Bill was timed-out - meaning there was not enough time for a full debate plus vote before close of business - it was wonderful to see MPs from across the political divide speak passionately in favour of giving mixed-sex couples the right to form a civil partnership. MPs on all sides agreed that opening civil partnerships is fair, popular, and has practical benefits for families. Against that overwhelming support, the Government’s spokesperson could only raise a few administrative concerns. The debate generated even more support for our campaign. Thanks to you, lots more MPs have registered their official backing. One MP who was contacted by a constituent - and who had not previously spoken on the issue - not only attended the debate but was also one of the Bill’s most outspoken supporters! Change will come, and when it does, it will be thanks to the overwhelming momentum you, our supporters, have generated.
