Refuse permission to Dunlaoghaire Harbour Co. to build a cruise ship berth in DL harbour

Refuse permission to Dunlaoghaire Harbour Co. to build a cruise ship berth in DL harbour
The Issue
Save Our Seafront are opposed to the building of a cruise ship berth in Dunlaoghaire harbour on the following grounds;
• DLH is a splendid Victorian harbour, part of the nation’s heritage. It is the 2nd oldest man-made harbour in the world & will be 200 yrs old in 2017. It must not be destroyed for a speculative commercial venture.
• Negative visual impact. Over 300 metres long and taller than Liberty Hall, super liners will dominate the harbour.
• Negative impact on sailing and leisure events due to berthing such large cruise ships in harbour.
• No objective evaluation appears to have been done as to whether the investment cost is recoverable.
• At present smaller cruise ships (23 expected in 2015) can moor at Carlisle pier and larger ones in the bay. No need to damage harbour.
• There is little evidence that cruise passengers would spend in Dun Laoghaire & most will be bussed off elsewhere
• 40 coaches daily needed to bus passengers through Dun Laoghaire.
• Dublin Port already has suitable berths for super cruisers. Its location is more suited to receive cruise liners & transfer them to tourist destinations
