Ban Plastic Straws in NZ

Ban Plastic Straws in NZ
The issue
In 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. In New Zealand, we have already taken many steps to reduce our use of single-use plastics: micro beads are about to be banned and plastic bags are on their way out so we believe plastic straws should be next. Plastic straws, among other ocean plastics, are detrimental to the marine environment. In the US alone, 500 million straws are unnecessarily used and thrown away every day. Here in New Zealand, we pride ourselves on being "100% clean and green " and banning plastic straws is the next step to protecting our pristine marine environment. We are campaigning to add to the Waste Minimisation Act 2008 to begin a process of phasing out harmful single-use plastics that have reusable alternatives (like straws) by 2030 to stop the problem of ocean plastics at its source.
