Australia's recycling industry is a mess! It needs a #CleanUp
The issue
Australia's recycling needs a #CleanUp
Did you know? On the 1st of January 2018, China stopped accepting 24 categories of solid waste, disrupting the export of more than 600,000 tonnes of material out of Australia each year! This change has turned Australia’s recycling industry into a mess, with local Councils across the country scrambling to find a solution to their fast-rising stockpiles of recyclable materials.
The Federal Government has repeatedly insisted that waste management and recycling is primarily the responsibility of state, territory and local governments. However, given the gravity of the current situation, Australians are looking to the Federal Government for leadership and direction.
#CleanUpAustraliasRecycling aims to increase Australian’s knowledge of the current waste crisis, encouraging voters to lobby the Federal Government to establish a Circular Economy.
A Circular Economy is an alternative to the wasteful traditional ‘linear’ economy based on ‘take, make, use and dispose'. It's a self-sustaining system driven by renewable energy with an imperative to keep material resources in use, or ‘circulating’ for as long as possible.
By signing this petition, you:
- Want the Federal Government to enable more on-shore processing of recyclable materials through supporting the establishment of a Circular Economy
- Understand that we all have a role to play in reducing Australia’s waste through choosing to reduce, reuse and recycle.
This petition is addressed to the Hon Melissa Price MP, the Federal Minister for the Environment.
Together, we can #CleanUpAustraliasRecyling.
