Dear all,
I've been prompted to write a quick update so that all of you who were kind enough to take an interest in supporting Khushal are kept in the loop.
In terms of political traction, my local MP, John Bercow has responded to the petition assuring me that action on behalf of the interpreters in general is imminent. James Brokenshire MP has still not been in touch. However, the Home Office - perhaps on his behalf - have sent me an email saying that the issue is one for the MOD to take care of and that they have forwarded my enquiry accordingly. As Khushal is now in the UK and claiming asylum here, I am not sure whether or not this is correct. I have also received a letter forwarded by John Bercow from Secretary of State at the MOD which basically does nothing more than outline the "on paper" policy of the UK towards Afghan LECs and makes no mention of Khushal.
Khushal has begun the preliminary stages of his Asylum application. We are hugely indebted to Asylum Aid http://www.asylumaid.org.uk/ for guiding us through this crucial process. It seems unlikely that we will have a verdict in the near future.
I'd also like to thank again all those people who have gone above and beyond in various ways to help Khushal - I hope you know who you are.
The most recent to add to that list is the fantastic The Bike Project. http://thebikeproject.co.uk/ (pictured giving away their 1000th bike - a "happy" coincidence - to Khushal). Founded by a friend of mine, they recycle second hand bikes and donate them to refugees. This simple gesture makes a big difference to people who are not allowed to work while they await their asylum decision: it means they can conserve their limited funds by not having to pay for transport and, I think, is also a great psychological boost to people in a state of vulnerability. If you have time, please consider voting for them to receive more funding here www.the-sse.org/SEYA
Or you can text SEYA Jem to 67076 for free.
Khushal himself is in good spirits and shape if not a little embarrassed by all the fuss. He thanks you for your continued support as the decision about his future is being made.
Best wishes,
George
