Dear all,
I am really pleased to announced that Khushal is now in the UK. We are currently in the process of finding a lawyer to instruct in the matter of his asylum application. I sincerely hope that, this being a democratic society, the weight of your collective opinion will at least bear somewhat in his favour during this process, and continue to support and encourage those other interpreters who are in genuine danger of their life and remain stranded between here and Afghanistan.
This process has brought me into contact with some incredibly kind-heated, generous and brave people who have gone well above and beyond. I hope you know who you are and that providence or karma rewards you suitably.
The issue is not entirely over, so I will keep you updated as to how his claim is dealt with. For all those who signed or donated, I applaud your empathy which has taught me a huge lesson in life.
Of the arguments I have encountered ranged against Khushal's request to come to the UK, I have only found one to be worth answering. This sophist argument relies purely upon the fact that Khushal was in no life threatening danger in Calais and therefore should be left there. While the premise is factually true, however, the conclusion is not at all justified because it takes no account of the morality of our position. It was our foreign policy that created the situation of civil-war from which Khushal has fled and cost him his brother's life - not the foreign policy of France. It was the interminable workings of our own procedures that left him exposed to threat for nearly a year - not those of France. And it was helping protect British soldiers that he made the friends who currently support him - not protecting French ones. So it is hard headed to the point of heartless to claim that abandoning him on our doorstep to a nation with whom he has no connection and owes him nothing is the best course of action.
Yours sincerely,
George Tyldesley
