PHASE responds to the Night Flights Consultation

Plane Hell Action SE responds to Part 1 of the Department for Transport’s Night Flights Consultation here.

Our response is based on

·         DfT’s ‘minimise impact’ has resulted in concentrated flight paths

·         the impact that Heathrow ARRIVALS flights have on S and SE London communities,

·         the omission of noise restrictions on arrivals flights (departures have such restrictions),

·         the fact that the Heathrow arrivals schedule with 4.30am landings meaning that overflight starts from 4.25am as planes line up to land, and does not end until 11.30pm thus giving only 5 hours of ‘night’ to overflown residents i.e. not the 6.5 hours that the consultation talks about and woefully less than WHO 8-hour guidance.

In summary: WHO stipulates a minimum of 8 hours sleep for physical and mental well-being.  Healthy people function better and make a greater contribution to the UK economy.  End night flights except for national emergencies and humanitarian reasons.
