MIND MATTERS: Breaking the Stigma Around Depression.
The Issue
We, the undersigned, stand together to break the stigma surrounding depression. Depression is not simply sadness, weakness, being dramatic, or seeking attention. It is a serious mental health condition that can affect a person’s thoughts, emotions, relationships, and daily life. Everyone deserves to be treated with understanding, respect, and compassion when facing mental health struggles.
According to the World Health Organization, depression is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, affecting over 264 million people. Yet, the stigma surrounding it discourages many from sharing their struggles or seeking professional help. This culture of silence and shame must end. Mental health should be discussed openly and responsibly so that people know that they are not alone and that support is available.
Through this petition, we call on our school and community to promote mental health awareness and create a safe and supportive environment for everyone. We encourage people to listen without judgment, avoid harmful stereotypes, and treat those experiencing depression with kindness. We believe that talking about depression should not be something to be ashamed of, but an important step toward understanding and support.
By signing this petition, we show our commitment to breaking the stigma surrounding depression and promoting a culture of empathy and acceptance. Let us choose understanding over judgment and support over silence. Together, we can create a community where people feel safe to speak, seek help, and know that their struggles matter.
