Missouri Governor Eric Greitens just issued Marcellus Williams a stay of execution. In a statement made today, Greitens said: “A sentence of death is the ultimate, permanent punishment. To carry out the death penalty, the people of Missouri must have confidence in the judgement of guilt. In light of new information, I am appointing a Board of Inquiry in this case.” The announcement came shortly after our delivery of this petition to his office, and hours before Marcellus was scheduled to be put to death. The Governor has appointed a Gubernatorial Board of Inquiry to review all of the new evidence in Marcellus’s case. While Marcellus’s innocence may appear obvious to us, it has been harder to convince Missouri’s Supreme Court that Marcellus is an innocent man. In fact, this isn’t the first time Marcellus’s execution has been stayed, only to later be rescheduled.
