Ban single-use plastic bags in Spokane.

Ban single-use plastic bags in Spokane.
The Issue
Plastic grocery bags have become way more of a nuisance than a convenience when it comes to the waste that they produce on a daily basis. According to reuseit.com over 1 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. America alone goes through 100 billion single-use plastic bags which costs retailers 4 billion a year. But the economic counterporductiveness is not the only downside to using single-use plastic bags, our environment suffers majorly. Plastic bags were recorded as the second most common type of ocean pollution, next to cigarette butts in 2008. If plastic bags are not getting thrown into the ocean, they are getting put into landfills and a single plastic bag can take up to 1,000 years to degrade! Plus, plastic bags remain toxic even after they break down. 10 cities in Washington have already banned single-use plastic bags along with many other cities across America. We need to perpetuate the conscious change that is happening all over the world and start taking steps that will help save our enviroment and our economy before its too late. I hope that you will support my petition in banning single-use plastic bags for Spokane. This one small change could help make a difference for our enviroment, economy and future generations that inhabit this planet. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you will support this small step towards being conscious and aware of how our actions affect us and future generations to come.
