Emily Jean started this petition to State Representative Mike Beltran and

Stand Your Ground consists of a number of Florida Statues that make it more difficult to procecute perpetrators of race-driven crime. The movement to amend these statues peaked in 2012 with the murder of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, but has since lost the momentum it needs. It is our hope that our representatives will hear our call to amend these racist and biased statues so that people are held accountable for their actions and race driven crime is deterred with another obstacle.

We call for . . .

An act relating to the use or threatened use of deadly force; providing legislative intent; amending s. 776.012, F.S, to require to attempt retreat or seek resolution before using deadly force; amending s. 776.013, F.S. to change the definition of a dwelling, require attempted resolution and require a imminent and known threat of safety before using deadly force; amending s. 776.031, F.S. to require the duty to retreat or seek resolution before using deadly force; amending s. 776.032, F.S, to eliminating pretrial immunity ; providing an effective date.

WHEREAS, on July 19th 2018, Michael Drejka killed Markeis McGlockton and was granted pretrial immunity.

WHEREAS, according to the Urban Land Institute, 11% of cases where the defendant and prosecutor are white are deemed justifiable under these statues, 8% when both parties are black, 34% when the victim is black and the shooter is white and 3% when the shooter is black and the victim is white, and

WHEREAS, according to studies conducted by the RAND Corporation statutes such as these may yield higher homicide rates and gun circulation, and

WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database, 3.11 white men and 26.53 black men are killed in firearm homicide per 100,000
