Change the law so that tenants can adopt greyhounds as the racing industry closes.
The issue
The dogs of NSW’s closing greyhound industry need new homes. I want as many homes as possible to be able to take in rescued greyhounds as pets. `
I was watching TV when the news about the Baird government's ban on greyhound racing (to commence in July 2017) came on... I started to look into the issue and was shocked to discover that thousands of greyhounds would need new homes. The only reason I can’t help is because I am a tenant and despite having a perfect doggy backyard, my landlord says no. Help me change this system! Current tenancy laws in NSW mean that many potential greyhound owners are unable to assist in rehoming greyhounds because landlords can (and often do) refuse tenant requests to have pets in their home.
Greyhounds are gentle, affectionate dogs that don’t need a lot of exercise or a big backyard. They are well suited to apartment living, rarely bark, and don’t lose much hair.
Landlords do not need to be worried either - tenants are responsible for damage that their pets cause to the premises.
Through closing the industry, the Baird government has created the need for homes for thousands of dogs. Please sign and share my petition to the Baird government to change tenancy laws so that landlords cannot unreasonably refuse tenants’ request for pets. This small change to legislation will mean that families and individuals willing to adopt greyhounds can do so, whether or not they own their own home.
