The budget was announced last week and the chancellor announced in his speech that "With My Right Honorable Friend the Environment Secretary I will investigate how the tax system and charges on single-use plastic items can reduce waste."
Later, in a press release by the treasury, it was confirmed that they would also be looking into a charge on other items such as coffee cups, citing the 5p charge on plastic bags as a mode
It's good news that they have chosen to look into this but the evidence is already out there:

This could be a ploy to silence supporters of the charge and just kick the idea into the long grass. Please keep supporting and sharing this petition as well as contacting your MP's if you haven't gotten around to that yet (http://www.parliament.uk/get-involved/contact-your-mp/#jump-link-2)
