In the early 1900’s there used to be 10 million elephants in Africa. Now there are just a few hundred thousand. There is also less than 20,000 lions. Trophy hunting is endangering so many animals.

Trophy hunting needs to stop for many reasons. Firstly because the animals usually suffer awhile before the poachers actually kill them. Secondly, poachers go for the bigger, better individuals which takes away the good genes from the populations. Stopping trophy hunting is important because it serves no good purpose. Animals deserve to live just as much as we do.

This problem needs to be delt with before to many animals go extinct. The first step we need to make is to make the law more strict about trophy hunting. We also need to start changing the culture. People think it’s alright, like there’s no consequences to hunt and rob the animals.

Kenya has already taken that first step. Kenya is trying to pass the law “Anyone caught poaching will be put to the death penalty.” This law should be spread across the world. Kenya is no longer giving fines for this crime. Poachers and traffickers of endangered animals used to go straight to prison or jail for three to seven years.

Poaching for ivory, rhino horn and the rare/valuable parts of the animals should be illegal. I believe that regular hunting for meat (like for your family) is alright. But killing for ivory and fur coats is cruel. Poaching wastes the animal and poses a risk of extinction of that species
