Here are the "facts" from the Metuchen Downtown Alliance's (MDA's) public relations campaign. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION. Do your research. Take a look - use your brain! "Some Sort of Plan" - from "Addressing Your Concerns" video There is no written plan on how this new $275,000 per year bureaucracy will accomplish their goals. The marketing is all fluff, there are no details. "All of this can be yours with NO New Taxes" - from 5 ways the MDA will benefit Metuchen Residents "multi-family rental properties with four or more units are deemed included in the assessing and taxing provision of this ordinance" - per Metuchen Ordinance 2016-10. "Hypothetically...$20 a month" - from "Business Owner Perspective - The Math is Simple" video Per Ordinance 2106-10, the projected 2020 fee on 400 Main Street, the building where Hailey's Harp and Pub is located, the projected 2020 fee is $996 per year. How this equates to $20 a month must be the "new math." The fee is less in the earlier years because the citizens of Metuchen are subsidizing the cost by transferring taxpayer money from the Parking Authority via the Borough to the MDA. "It is proposed that nominally 10% of the proceeds from the sale of the Pearl Street parking lot will help fund the program over its first five year" - from "Now is the time for the Metuchen Downtown Alliance," April 27, 2016 Criterion Why wasn't it mentioned that the Pearl Street parking lot proceeds are approximately 6 million dollars? 10% of $6,000,000 = $600,000. That's $600,000 of Metuchen taxpayer money! "If you don't TAKE A CHANCE, nothing's going to happen. That's the bottom line." - from "Forum Theatre Owner Weighs in on MDA" video Take a chance with the status quo? Lies, fluff, and misleading us! The truth matters. The FACTS matter: NO written plan, questionable math, a nominal $600,000 of taxpayer money, and new taxes for multi-family rental properties with 4 or more units. The bottom line: high taxes are causes citizens and businesses (jobs) to flee this state! Attend the Monday, May 2, 2016, 7:30 PM PUBLIC HEARING at Metuchen Borough Hall. Remember this is how democracy is suppose to work. We are not "little" or "small" people. We are REAL people who worked hard for their money. We are BRAINY people. Were you an unintended consequence of misguided government overregulation? Tell your heartfelt story. Just be yourself. That is the winning formula! Showing up to the public hearing communicates—loud and clear—that you want what's best for Metuchen and say it: "I Love the Brainy Boro." The status quo will only change if YOU get involved.
