The Metuchen Borough council discussed the Metuchen Downtown Alliance (MDA) at the April 4, 2016, council meeting. The council members who spoke appeared to be in favor of the MDA. The borough is proceeding with writing the MDA ordinance for presentation at the next council meeting on April 18, 2016 (if the ordinance is completed by then).
I attended the meeting and asked the council where was the vision for updating the older traditional downtown area which needs new sidewalks, planters, parking meters, etc. Council members agreed that this area of the downtown needs an update and apparently the Metuchen Borough Council will be in charge of redoing the sidewalks, parking meters, and parking lots, in one cohesive design, to make the entire area an attractive successful showpiece, NOT THE MDA!
An inviting downtown will create an environment that will help all the businesses, existing and future, thrive, NOT a tax increase!
So the question remains: What is the $275,000 per year bureaucracy's function? I heard it mentioned that the MDA will schedule the piazza events. Are they brain dead? That's not even a full time job.
The solution to a vibrant downtown is for government to remove the obstacles and get out of the way!
