Having been kidnapped three weeks ago from his home in Libya, Abu Agila Masud was transported to the United States and appeared in a Washington DC courthouse on Monday 12 December 2022.

Michael H Glasheen, at the FBI's Washington field office, said: "The lawful arrest and presentment in court of the alleged bomb maker is the product of hard work and partnerships across the globe."

As Abu Agila Masud was attending the court hearing, former US Attorney General William Barr told the BBC's Sarah Smith that Masud should face the death penalty. Barr said he'd wanted the first Lockerbie trial - which took place in a Scottish court in the Netherlands in 2000 - to be held in America. The historic court case saw Abdelbaset al-Megrahi found guilty of murder in 2001, and his co-accused, Lamin Khalifah Fhimah, found not guilty.

"I wanted it to be tried in the United States as well. And I wanted to pursue the death penalty in the United States.

"I didn't want to proceed to Scotland, partly because Scotland would not impose the death penalty.

"Personally, I think terrorists who commit these kinds of atrocities should be executed," Mr Barr said.

Masud was remanded in US custody until a detention hearing takes place on 27 December 2022.

William Barr was US Attorney General on 23 July 2019 when convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, awaiting a further trial, was found dead in his prison cell. Epstein's death was alleged to have been caused by his suicide.
