Meta Must Provide Human Review and Restore Wrongly Disabled Nigerian Accounts
The Issue
Facebook and Instagram are more than social media apps for millions of Nigerians. They are where people run businesses, find customers, build communities, promote their work, communicate with family, advertise, create content, and earn a living.
Many Nigerian users have spent years building legitimate personal accounts, business pages, Instagram accounts, audiences, customer relationships, content libraries, and advertising histories. Some have grown their pages to thousands or millions of followers through genuine hard work.
Yet, many users are suddenly locked out, suspended, restricted, hacked, disabled, or permanently removed from Facebook and Instagram without a clear explanation or a fair opportunity to resolve the problem.
Affected users report different but related problems, including:
- Personal Facebook or Instagram accounts disabled without a clear reason.
- Business pages, creator accounts, and advertising accounts restricted or removed.
- Accounts suspended after false, malicious, or mass reports by competitors, haters, or bad actors.
- Accounts hacked, taken over, or wrongly linked to activities the real owner did not commit.
- Accounts disabled under vague policy, integrity, security, impersonation, or community-standard allegations.
- Users completing identity verification, facial verification, or passport submission, but still receiving no meaningful review.
- Linked Facebook and Instagram accounts being affected at the same time.
- Appeal systems that do not work, do not respond, or tell users to log in to an account that is shown as nonexistent.
- Years of photos, videos, customer messages, business records, advertising investment, and community trust becoming inaccessible overnight.
- We support Meta’s responsibility to protect its platforms from scams, impersonation, fraud, abuse, harmful content, and fake accounts. However, Meta must not rely on unclear, inaccessible, or automated enforcement processes that wrongly punish legitimate users and destroy Nigerian businesses without proper investigation.
A false report should not be enough to permanently remove a genuine account. An automated decision should not be the final decision when a person’s business, livelihood, memories, customers, and years of work are at stake.
We are calling on Meta to take urgent action for Nigerian users.
Our demands
We call on Meta to:
- Restore Facebook and Instagram accounts, pages, and business assets that were wrongly suspended, disabled, restricted, hacked, or removed after a proper review.
- Provide a clear and specific explanation whenever an account, page, advert account, or business asset is restricted or disabled.
- Ensure that every affected user has access to a working, timely, and meaningful appeal process.
- Provide qualified human review for appeals involving permanent disablement, business loss, hacked accounts, identity-verification disputes, and suspected false reports.
- Investigate reports fairly before taking permanent action against an account, especially where there is evidence of harassment, false reporting, hacking, or impersonation.
- Protect legitimate users from losing access to their content, customer messages, advertising history, pages, and business records while a case is under review.
- Create a reliable and accessible support and escalation channel for Nigerian businesses, creators, advertisers, and everyday users.
- Improve transparency around automated enforcement, account restrictions, appeals, and wrongful removals affecting Nigerian users.
- We are not asking Meta to ignore its rules. We are asking Meta to apply its rules fairly, transparently, and with real human accountability.
- Ensure that appeals involving permanent disablement receive qualified human review.
- Preserve account data, business records, advertising history, customer messages, and content while an appeal is pending.
- Establish an accessible escalation channel for Nigerian businesses and creators whose accounts have been wrongly disabled.
If you have lost an account, business page, customers, income, advertising access, memories, or years of hard work because of an unfair Facebook or Instagram decision, please sign and share this petition.
Nigerian users deserve fair treatment, clear explanations, and a real chance to be heard.
