Why this petition matters

Started by The Jimmy Dean® Brand

The way America eats is evolving. More than one in three* Americans are vowing to eat less bread in the new year. In fact, half* of Americans have eaten a breadless sandwich. Shouldn’t the dictionary evolve with the people?

Merriam-Webster currently defines a sandwich as: two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between.

This definition is stale. There are countless ways to build a sandwich. Delightful deli meats between crisp pieces of iceberg lettuce. Savory chicken between two grilled portobello mushrooms. And anyone who has tried a Jimmy Dean Delights® Egg’wich can tell you that two egg frittatas work just as well as bread to hold savory sausage and cheese together. But the dictionary clearly believes that a sandwich must start with bread.

It’s time for the definition of “sandwich” to represent all Americans’ eating preferences. Please join us in calling on Merriam-Webster to change the definition of a sandwich, updating it to reflect that a sandwich simply contains: two or more layers of delicious food, having more delicious food filled in between.

Timed to National Sandwich Day, please join us in signing the petition for sandwiches and sandwich eaters everywhere, recognizing all the awesome ways a sandwich can be assembled!

Tastefully yours,

Your friends at the Jimmy Dean Brand
