The meter was originally defined as the length of a stick in Paris. It then was defined to be such that 10,000 meters was exactly the distance from the North Pole to the equator through Paris. Today it is defined as the distance light travels in 1/299792458th's of a second, in a vacuum. It has a rich history, and thus deserves to have a rich name.
