Calder Valley: Where are our flood schemes?!

The Calderdale Petition

On Boxing Day 2015 the towns, homes, and businesses of the Upper Calder Valley were devastated by some of the worst floods ever experienced here, proportionately amongst the worst in the country. The longterm viability of these communities is now threatened, undermined by uncertainty about the future.

Only one place - Todmorden - was partly successfully protected, principally by its new Environment Agency flood prevention scheme. The other Valley bottom settlements were defenceless, just as they had been in the repeated floods of 2012. Except that since 2012, major planned schemes downstream in Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd have made no progress and are still more than 50% unfunded.

If businesses are to reinvest, homeowners to restore their properties, and local economies to bounce back rather than decay THEY NEED TO KNOW THAT FLOOD PREVENTION SCHEMES HAVE BEEN DESIGNED, FULLY FUNDED AND APPROVED BY YOUR GOVERNMENT. And it’s unacceptable that such schemes should have to demonstrate £8 of benefit for every £1 invested. For UK locations subject to persistent flooding just £1 for £1 should be sufficient, and with no funding rationing, so as to demonstrate national solidarity with flooded communities.

The clock is ticking because the next flood could be tomorrow, whilst flood schemes take years to implement. 3½ years more delay as happened after the 2012 floods just won’t do. So BY 26TH JUNE 2016 - the 6 month anniversary of the 2015 floods - we say it’s YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE THESE CALDER VALLEY SCHEMES HAPPEN
