Animal Cruelty Legislation Advocates Canada

Sep 22, 2016
The Tweetstorm the other night was a huge success -- #BillC246 trended 4th in Canada! Between the Tweetstorm and some amendments MP Erskine-Smith has suggested to Bill C-246, several MPs who were previously not supporting the bill now are, and we thank these MPs! However, there are still many MPs who have not let their constituents know how they plan to vote. There are other MPs who, despite the suggested amendments, still plan to vote “no.” WE REALLY NEED YOU TO CHECK THE LIST OF HOW MP’s ARE VOTING AND, IF YOUR MP IS ANYTHING BUT “YES”, WE NEED YOU TO E-MAIL (OR PHONE) THEM IMMEDIATELY!
PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS*:
1) If you don't know who your MP is, find out here: https://goo.gl/SfhllF
2) Check the list of MPs and how they are voting here: https://goo.gl/nJWsl7
3) If your MP does not have “Yes” beside his or her name, send them an e-mail. You can copy and paste the sample e-mail below, but it’s good to use some of your own words.
4) Let us know if you receive a response from your MP by e-mailing: passc246@yahoo.com
*All these instructions and more information can be found at https://goo.gl/XO70V5 and www.CallYourMP.ca
PLEASE DO THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The second half of the debate will still take place on September 28, but the vote will not happen until October 5. We still have a lot of MPs to get on board before then! Thank you for your support for Bill C-246! ~ Charlene, Mary, and teams

SUBJECT: Amendments to Bill C-246 remove farmers’, hunters’ & anglers’ concerns!
Dear MP (Your MP’s name),
As your constituent and an advocate for the humane treatment of animals, I’m writing regarding Private Member’s Bill C-246, the Modernizing Animals Protections Act. Specifically, I want to draw to your attention some amendments to the bill that have been suggested by the bill’s proponent, Member of Parliament Nathaniel Erskine-Smith.
After watching an interview with MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, the creator of the legislation, it is my understanding that he has worked with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and SPCAs across the country to rework sections of the bill. Mr. Erskine-Smith has done this specifically to come up with solutions that address the concerns of the agricultural sector, hunters and anglers.
The amendments he has suggested in order to address these concerns are as follows:
1. Animals will remain in the property section of the Criminal Code
2. Killing, or allowing an animal to be killed, “brutally or viciously” will be removed from the bill
Please review MP Erskine-Smith’s video for clarification of these amendments: https://youtu.be/tP8yXYLKN_Q
Will you support this latest version of the bill with the proposed amendments, that now addresses all the concerns of stakeholders and is now endorsed by many rural MPs?
SECURING MY VOTE IN THE NEXT ELECTION WILL DEPEND ON YOUR SUPPORT OF THIS URGENT ISSUE. I am one of hundreds of thousands of Canadians who have come together across the country in support of protecting animals with Bill C-246. We have written multiple letters to MPs, signed petitions, and joined concerted efforts on social media asking our government to make changes to 125-year old animal cruelty laws. Now we must insist that you act in the best interests of this country as you were elected to do, and support the wishes of your constituents, and citizens across Canada, who have asked you to vote in favour of Bill C-246 on October 5!
It’s time for you to do your part and honour the wishes of those who elected you. 92% of Canadians surveyed want better animal protection legislation that makes it easier to convict animal abusers. Animals in this country deserve better treatment and Bill C-246 will ensure that happens. On October 5, please vote in favour of Bill C-246 going to committee for further study. It is by no means a perfect piece of legislation, but I am willing to compromise. You should be too. Small steps forward to protect Canada’s animals are better than no steps at all.
Do the right thing and STAND UP FOR ANIMALS in Canada.
I look forward to your positive response.
Sincerely,
