Tell Your Politicians: Jews #MarchForOurLives

Our Jewish community joins with all other Americans in demanding sane gun laws and the protection of our schools and public spaces. Once again, after the Parkland shooting, the focus has returned to our country’s record on gun violence, which is far and away the worst in the developed world. American Jews remember where these mass shootings have taken place: Columbine, Virginia Tech, Tucson, Aurora, Newtown, Orlando, Las Vegas and now Parkland. We fear that our hometowns or communities could be next, because no one is safe when it is so easy to skirt background checks and purchase weapons of war.
Our scriptures tell us not to stand idly by the blood of our neighbors. We have been inspired by the survivors of the Parkland shooting, who have transformed their grief into a potent call for action, in a profound act of tikkun olam (repairing the world). These survivors amplify and continue the activism of gun violence victims, including former Rep. Gabby Giffords. Their resolve puts to shame politicians who vote down sensible gun safety legislation and take money from the National Rifle Association.
We American Jews stand shoulder to shoulder with these brave teenagers, and will not be silent as this weighty issue is debated. We, too, #MarchForOurLives, and will turn up at the various protests and actions being planned over the next months. For state legislators and congressmen alike, the message should be clear: ban assault weapons, tighten background checks and place limits on the deadliness of firearms. Otherwise, don’t expect our votes in November.
