Melbourne FL: Request to Join the Ready for 100 #Mayors4CleanEnergy Sustainability Pledge
Burning coal, oil, and natural gas has serious and long-standing negative impacts on public health, local communities and ecosystems, and the global climate. Here in Brevard we sit at Ground-Zero of the impacts of Climate Change. We are seeing beach erosion along with facing significant future loss of current tax base from rising sea levels, devastating pollution in our Indian River Lagoon and rising cases of health care issues relating to pollutants in our air and water. This is a real and present threat to our county and state.
The best way to mitigate these impacts is by embracing a clean energy plan that transitions Brevard County’s energy usage for City Operations to 100% clean energy by 2035 and to transition all energy usage within City Limit to 100% clean energy by 2050.
So far across the country 112 Mayors have signed the Mayors For 100% Clean Energy Pledge. This includes 17 Mayors in Florida but Brevard is not represented in this list at all. We demand our legislators to sign on to this pledge and commit to a sustainable and prosperous future for all cities and citizens of Brevard county.
We owe it to our children to confront the climate crisis head-on and build a cleaner, stronger, more sustainable country. Young Americans are set to become the next stewards of our planet, and polling shows that they’re overwhelmingly concerned about the impacts of climate change. It’s time for Brevard’s leaders to listen to the next generation.
