Save Our Mural! Tell Melbourne City Council not to remove great, local public art
The Issue
The Clyde Hotel commissioned a Victorian artist to create a beautiful mural to show the best of our beloved Carlton.
We made the decision after being repeatedly tagged. Melbourne City Council provided little support to stop our ongoing graffiti problem.
After dragging its feet, Melbourne City Council has decided that the artwork is not a mural or art, but advertising. They've ordered it to be removed.
The mural is art. It was designed and painted by a young local artist. It has no connection whatsoever with Carlton United Brewery/Carlton Draught, and all branding was removed, per Council's direction. The message "Greetings From Carlton" celebrates the suburb that the Clyde has operated in for over a century. The mural shows off our neighbourhood: the Old Quad Clocktower, our distinctive Victorian Terraces, Lygon St's Coffee Culture, and the Royal Exhibition Buildings.
Sign this petition to tell the Council that you'd rather have an attractive piece of local art, and financially support a local artist, than have a tagged wall.
