Мы, жители Алматы, крупнейшего города Казахстана, финалиста на право проведения Зимней Олимпиады 2022 года, обращаемся к согражданам и мировой общественности с просьбой подписать эту петицию.

В нашем городе планируют открыть первый ресторан сети быстрого питания "Макдональдс". Однако событие приобретает скандальный оттенок, поскольку для этой цели планируют снести кинотеатр «Алатау», построенный в 1958 году, который исторически являлся знаковым местом в культурной жизни города.

Мы приветствуем международные бренды в нашей стране, но не поддерживаем уничтожение ради этого социальных объектов.

К сожалению, в Алматы в угоду частным интересам разрушается исторический центр и грубо нарушаются правила застройки.

При подготовке к сносу кинотеатра уже уничтожены несколько больших деревьев. Экологическая обстановка в городе, входящем в Топ-10 в мире по загрязнению воздуха, находится на грани катастрофы, в том числе из-за того, что при сносе зданий не утилизируется должным образом строительный мусор.

Мы не понимаем, зачем нужно сносить здание, являющееся частью исторического облика Алматы, чтобы открыть точку быстрого питания. Предложенный проект – это не архитектура для центра города, а здание для придорожной закусочной.

К тому же, в кинотеатре «Алатау», где умещаются 900 зрителей, могут прекрасно соседствовать культурно-развлекательное учреждение и "Макдональдс". Мировая практика знает много примеров переформатирования старых кинотеатров в успешные комбинированные объекты.

Мы знаем, что "Макдональдс" в других странах ответственно и уважительно подходил к открытию своих объектов, дорожил своей репутацией. Хотелось, чтобы и в Казахстане "Макдональдс" воспринимался как ответственный бизнес, который жители города приветствуют.

Мы, жители Алматы, рассчитываем на содействие со стороны руководства "Макдональдс" в спасении здания, так как местная компания, купившая франшизу, не проявляет желания прислушаться к мнению горожан и тем самым наносит ущерб репутации фирмы "Макдональдс".

Настоящим письмом мы хотим привлечь внимание общественности к тому, что город утрачивает свой неповторимый дух и архитектурный облик. В Алматы за 23 года после обретения независимости образовался дефицит объектов культуры и образования.

Просим всех неравнодушных к этим проблемам подписать эту петицию.

 

We the citizens of Almaty, urge our fellow world citizens to add their signature to this petition to stop the demolition of the Alatau Cinema.

Almaty is the largest and most populous city in Kazakhstan and the nation’s cultural center. Established in the Bronze Age, Almaty has been important to the human race for centuries. It was a stop on the Silk Road in the Middle Ages, then later witnessed the establishment of the Kazakh race and nation. Throughout the Soviet era, revolution, World War II, and industrialism, Almaty has remained an important city and each of these historical periods has left its mark on the city. As a testament to this, Almaty is a finalist to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

One of the most beautiful historic buildings in our city is facing demolition to make way for the first McDonald's fast food restaurant in Kazakhstan. Alatau Cinema was built in 1958 and since then has been an important part of cultural life in our city, it is a landmark location which we do not want to loose.

While we welcome international brands to Kazakhstan, we do not support the destruction of cultural landmarks in order to make way for them. We are disappointed and angered to see private interests taking precedence over the preservation of historical sites.

City planning laws have been grossly violated to accommodate McDonald’s entry into Almaty and several large trees have already been cut down in preparation for demolition of the cinema. This is especially egregious considering Almaty’s ecological standing as one of the top 10 most air-polluted cities in the entire world. The ecological environment in Almaty is on the brink of catastrophe, not the least because of improper disposal of construction waste.

In preparation for demolition of the Alatau cinema, several large trees have already been cut down as well.

As Steve Easterbrook, the President and CEO of McDonald's Corporation's has said that the culture of giving back is reflected in the company's franchisees' efforts to operate greener restaurants and support local communities in their drive for environmental goals.

We are urging Mr.Easterbrook to stand up for his words.

With this letter, we hope to draw the public’s attention to the fact that Almaty is losing more than an old building. Almaty is losing a component of its unique spirit and a piece of architectural heritage. Independent for twenty-three years, now Almaty pawns off one of her most characteristic and proud structures to the highest bidder, in order to make way for a global corporation that will feed off of Almaty while nourishing only its franchisee. Almaty suffers from a shortage of cultural and educational facilities and a business owner interested in profiting from the community of Almaty should not simply exploit it; they should invest in it.
