The Oktoberfest festival ended up being cancelled. But this petition was not in vain because we managed to mobilise over 3,000 people to speak up for civil liberties. Secular movement BEBAS, which I am a part of, managed to hand in the petition to the PJ mayor, which was widely covered in the English and Chinese press. I encourage all of you to start your own petitions on any issue that you deem important. It is crucial that Malaysians participate in democracy every day, and not just vote in general elections. While petitions or calling our lawmakers frequently may not have the desired results, but it is important to constantly demand accountability from our elected officials.
