Over the past several years, in service to the community, I have been writing several documents. One is now called the "Broadband Solutions for Whatcom County" document as I'll explain below. I also wrote a "Dig Once Policy." Here are links to the original documents. (I'll explain why I decided to do this in a minute).

However, while establishing and working on a program for TAGNW called "Reconnect" in association with the public libraries to give free computers and kits to the poor, director Michael Gan asked me to bring my document to TAGNW for final development. I said, "sure why not." Well, this turned out to be a mistake.
You see, we did a great job on the document. A team of mostly a-political people went over the document edited it and were ready to publish it. We were being baby sat by Andrew Reding on behalf of the Corporate Dems., but everyone is welcome so what harm could come from that...? Well.. let me continue.
That's when Andrew Reding and Jamie Douglass, chairs of the 40th and 42nd Democrats respectively, demanded an unnecessary "review period" and that's when things got weird and special interests started to rear their ugly heads as I predicted they would.
As usual, in my other life I am a journalist and I write about telecom and environmental issues. This will become important soon. I like many people, wear many hats and I thought had the rights of any American citizen... Well...
Many odd things started to happen to the document and the group. The influence of special interests and the politicians linked to big telecom were being pushed by the Corporate Democrats (especially those lined to Sharon Shewmake who take money from a local big telecom investor).
It was at this point that I realized that I needed to make an original copy of the public document and possibly post it as I have above.
When I fought back on behalf of the community Andrew Reding demanded secret meetings, that were held while I was out of state working, and pathologically lied about me to the group. Demanding that I be removed for my work as a journalist and for holding public officials accountable. All actions I took were outside of the group, as a citizen, in my personal life. Since I didn't do anything wrong while in the group they started grasping at straws and using my newspaper articles against me and the community.
While Andrew said he was doing this personally and not on behalf of the party, everything he does has the reach of the multi-million dollar Whatcom Democratic Party behind it. In these secret meetings, he let TAGNW know that if he didn't get his way he would do everything in his power to discredit their name and insinuated that his actions would probably result in lower donations to the group. He would also discredit the document. Sound like bullying to anyone else? That's only because it is.
Remember, TAGNW is a group that provides computers to the poor and helps kids win STEM competitions. I guess threatening non-profits that help out the homeless, the poor, and children is just where the Corporate Dems. are at right now.
Sadly, as director Michael Gan admitted, the TAGNWs CoC (code of condut) is so poorly written that if you volunteer for them and someone, like Andrew, overhears you say something they don't like, even say when you're out at the bar, he can submit it as a CoC violation.
The TAGNW CoC is supposedly being cleaned up to prevent this kind of obvious abuse by special interests in the future but as it stands right now Reding and the Corporate Democrats he's linked to can, and do, exploit it to protect their candidates that are linked to big telecom and special interest donors.
After one of my articles linked Sharon Shewmake, Alex Ramel, and several others to big telecom donors Andrew went ballistic. So that's where the Dems. are at these days. If you involve them in any activities they will bully you and the community to get their way. If you volunteer for TAGNW under this CoC you will, even though you're not being paid, be subject to this CoC and special interests will use it to run your life. Or try anyway.
With Comcast, WAVE, etc. now being invited to the group we can expect that moving forward the results will probably be as poor as the complete lack of results we've seen from the City's pro big telecom Broadband Advisory Group. But hey, maybe you can pass along the original version of this instead that I've linked to above. After all, it's a public document at this point and I wrote most of it. We'll call it the "pre-special interest version". Which is rather good. You know, that's the real shame here. Had we just released the document when it was ready it would have been released in the pro-community spirit it was written in. In fact, it would have positive effects nationwide.
I do hope that TAGNW has the integrity to keep the document in a form that serves the public interests and resist the fascism of the Corporate Democrats and their special interest donors.
Note: Everyone has always been able to comment publicly on my newspaper articles. I should also note that I was never given an opportunity to defend myself. I guess that's why I wrote this.
