Petition updateBellingham/Whatcom County Publicly Owned Fiber Optic NetworkCenturyLink Will Not Be Providing Better Service in the County

CenturyLink confirmed with the city's IT director that they will be doing nothing in the county in way of new service. Combine this with what's going on in the city, and the fact that their services costs way more than any other developed country, and places in the US like Kansas City, and it's still hard for me to understand why we are rolling over and going out of our way to treat them better even than Comcast. They will pull out of Bellingham within 5 years if they don't get 20% market share and will not even give us a local office until they get 30% with varied quality of service (aka not FTTH for most). Even Comcast gives us a local office at about 25%. So basically they won't do it right unless they become a monopoly, and then they probably won't do it right because they're a monopoly (add thousands of historical references here). Oh yeah, and all of that Anti-Net Neutrality, censorship of data, etc. stuff should be mentioned again too. Original E-mail: "One bit of information since you live slightly outside of City limits: I did ask CenturyLink if they might apply to provide the service outside of Bellingham City limits. Their answer was no. --Marty" I should note that my concerns never had anything to do with where I live. I can't morally do business with a company like CenturyLink. If I had real choice, I would do it with a local provider, just like most of us. I'd also require that provider to be Net-Neutral, again like most of us.
