Hello, I wanted to post an article highlighting CeturyLink's behavior in other areas as they start to advertise "new services" in Bellingham. If you know anyone that is entertaining their services, make sure they ask if they're getting a direct Fiber to the Home Installation. Anything else is either old copper or a half-assed install. They have been in trouble several times for over representing their services. They also do little to address the needs of low-income households. Sure, they technically have a low-income connection, but it's a joke.
One of the big reasons to promote public fiber is that having public infrastructure changes the behavior of the private companies too and makes them more accountable. Plus, the providers on a publicly owned network would be local, which creates good jobs in our community.
This kind of behavior paired with Senator Erickson's disastrous 5711 telecom bill would mean that companies like CenturyLink, Comcast, Verizon, etc. would be excluded from land use reviews, which is bad for the environment, and will possibly pay no fees for use of public infrastructure. If there is a silver lining to the 5711 cloud it's that the City has preferred providers that pay franchise fees in the past to doing something better that is publicly owned. Also, all of the CenturyLink contracts are very long.
Here's the bill:
