Reward Officer Burgos for Risking His Life to Save Trapped Animals from Pet Store Fire
The Issue
Police Officers Rafael Burgos and Jeffrey Korger responded to a fire at the Route 23 Pet Center in Franklin, New Jersey. Firefighters had not yet arrived, so Officer Burgos conducted a search of the store to make sure there were no employees trapped inside. Once he was confident there were no other lives in danger, he then risked his own life to rescue the dozens of dogs, cats and other animals in the store, that otherwise would have perished. Every animal made it out alive and Officer Burgos was briefly hospitalized. In spite of his bravery and compassion, a Councilman in his district stated, "A police officer who decides to enter a hazardous situation...where no human life is at risk, isn't a hero, he's a fool...and is NOT deserving of 'hero' status, but rather, disciplinary action." Please join us in urging Mayor Phillip Kramer not to take disciplinary action against Officer Burgos and to instead reward him for his bravery and compassion for all living things.
