Petition Update No. 16: Saturday, 17 July 2021.
From this year’s crop of twenty nests beside North Shields ferry landing there were 26 nestlings on 15 July. This is a remarkable result despite the bird-deterrent netting which was placed there last December. At the six nests along the netting edge which contain chicks, there were ten nestlings. The adult kittiwakes have so far avoided entanglement in the netting. Let’s hope the chicks are able to manage the same and can fledge successfully over the next few weeks.
The summer weather had been generally good and the River Tyne holds very good numbers of kittiwake nestlings overall. Investigations continue into a potential new nesting site not too far away from this netted location.
Thank you very much for your support,
from Daniel and the Kittiwakes of North Shields.
