Petition Update No. 14: Sunday, 30 May 2021.

Am so proud of the North Shields Kittiwakes! With the odds stacked against them, they have persevered and prevailed. Through persistently testing the deterrent netting they found a way and a place to build nests around its base. I did not think this would be possible, but the kittiwakes are champion nest builders and showed me their solution. Their well-built nests are quite remarkable. Let’s hope their nestlings-to-come experience no netting issues. A few other adults have moved round to nest in the guttering on the east of the building.

I continue to investigate (in association with North Tyneside Council, Wild Intrigue and the Tyne Kittiwake Partnership) one or two sites on the north bank of the Tyne, up to 2.5 km upstream, where a structure may be built for kittiwakes to nest upon without conflict with people.

Sending thanks for all your support,

from a slightly happier Daniel and the Kittiwakes of North Shields
