We are filing this petition with immense sorrow , a heavy heart and grief. Due to the recent collapse of an under Construction Bridge in the Burrabazar area of8 Kolkata on Thursday, dated 31st March’2016 around 12:35 pm. All of sudden a sunny afternoon turned out in a dark black day for the people of Kolkata. Though the media estimated around 20 to 25 people losing their lives, but the figure might very well be far and above that. As per the onlookers and the residents, the injured and death toll is in hundreds and, there were many more people , who were injured severely. The impact  of the collapse, also caused damage to nearby houses ,properties, and establishments. Many lives , families and livelihood remains permanently damaged and affected.

   The harsh reality is that this incident is not being treated with the gravity that it demands , and we believe that the affected lives of the citizens are not getting their dues.To add to the misery of the victims no proper information or reason is being provided by the concerned departments including the media, as no one seems bothered to come ahead with the truth. 

We do not intend to Blame/Oppose/Support any of the Government/Political Party / Public Body/ Association or Institution. Being a part of a free nation and active citizens of this city, we have all the rights to be concerned about our and our family's safety , and that of our fellow citizens. Our main aim behind filing this petition, is to free the people from the fear and chance of another mishap. 

  The said bridge was under construction since 2009 and before it became operational, it has collapsed. We , the residents of the nearby areas, who regularly use these routes for our daily commute, are in constant fear and in a serious danger , for the collapse of the rest of the Bridge.We cannot live in the fear of losing our life every moment. Therefore we pray to you to  stop any further development work on this Bridge ,and with immediate effect, dismantle the remaining part of the bridge for the safety of all.

 Our prime fear and concerns are : - 

1.The bridge was built on a connecting path from North part with rest of the city including Howrah and Saltlake area and the portion of the bridge that fell was right on the 4 way crossing affecting all. It was always a bustling region with several offices, numbers of local shops, public and private transports, schools students, small hawkers, daily wage earners and a densely populated residential area, all their lives are in danger. It is not the life threat to the local people only but also for the entire people of Kolkata.

2.The main problem being faced by the people in the area is the fear of their life and that of their dear ones. The remaining part of the bridge which still stands has been constructed by the same Contractors/ Agency , with the same material and the same expertise. 

3. Who shall take responsibility of the remainder of the bridge, what if the same accident will repeat? And what is the guarantee that a similar accident won't repeat in the remaining part of the bridge ?

4. Even if the contract of finishing the bridge is been provided to another contractor  , still, the present remaining portion of the bridge raises the risk of collapse.

5. There are old structured buildings standing on both the sides of the road. Few of which has also been affected by the accident. What if, next time one of these buildings fall due to the damage afflicted by this incident?

4.       We understand that a huge amount of our own public money is involved in this construction, but for the safety of  our own lives, we again pray that the remainder portion o f the bridge be removed as soon as possible , as we cannot help but wonder, whether the losses or expenses involved in dismantling the remainder is equal to a few or a single life and livelihood?

5. Only stopping  the construction of the bridge will not benefit the people or the fear will not end since the other remaining parts can fall anytime anywhere.Which is a direct threat to us and our families..

We respect the sentiments of all, but living in constant fear is not the choice of life we expect for us and our families. We firmly believe that dismantling entire bridge will assure the safety of people around. Hence, our humble request is to DISMANTLE THE WHOLE REMAINING PART OF THE BRIDGE FOREVER, FOR THE SAFETY OF PUBLIC.
