An open letter To The Mayor and Council,
I wish to formally ask the council to consider an amendment to the current waste bylaw, specifically # 2059,Commercial waste containers containing any wildlife attractants must be kept closed at all times and closed and secured at the end of the business day in such a manner so as to prevent access to the wildlife attractants by wildlife. [Amended by Bylaw No. 2059]
I feel that this current bylaw is not specific enough and relies solely upon the business and /or its employees to somehow prevent wildlife access to the containers.
I would ask that either an amendment or a brand new bylaw be instituted that would mandate only Bear proof containers within the City of Fernie for all commercial applications possibly excluding temporary construction waste containers, this would, I feel , go at least part of the way to preventing this mass slaughter of bears within our community, just as an aside, Fernie is taking great pains to promote itself as a tourist town/city and a large part of that promotion is the outdoors/wildlife aspect of our valley and the current mind set of both provincial and municipal governments towards controlling wildlife, in particular bears, does nothing to help our image, particularly with tourists from abroad, sooner or later it will, if not already, damage our image.
I have said it before and will say it again, we currently warn absent property owners to either clean up unkempt lawns etc or do it for them and charge, surely, a bears life is worth more than long grass or weeds, they are a magnificent animal that deserves not only our respect but also our utmost best efforts to co-exist peacefully.
