Build a traffic circle at the intersection of 11800 N. & Highland Blvd. in Highland City, Utah to make the area safer and slow the flow of traffic.
The Issue
My wife and I have been reading about the terrible accident over the past couple of days at the intersection that severely injured a mother and daughter (Maylee and Christine) in Highland.
For those that are not aware, here is a link: http://www.kutv.com/news/features/top-stories/stories/Utah-County-crash-puts-mother-and-daughter-in-critical-condition-140527.shtml#.VWYBKJNViko
Although we're not related to, nor do we know this family personally, we do live in the general area and wanted to extend our deepest sympathies to their family. We feel very much for Maylee and Christine and hope they can return back to as normal of a life as possible as they begin their healing process.
At the same time, we've been trying to think of anything we could do to help out and so we thought of this petition to do whatever possible to minimize the chances of this happening to anyone again.
We would like Highland City to prioritize an infrastructure project to improve the intersection at 11800 N. and Highland Blvd in Highland Utah. I have read a number of articles stating the numerous accidents that have happened over the past few years. There are some dangerous aspects dealing the the speed and curves in the road that limit a drivers visibility while turning south onto Highland Blvd. Many times, I have seen people driving 50 - 60 mph on this road (posted speed limit is 40 mph at the intersection).
There is also a strange transition from a single lane on the northbound side to double lane that could cause someone not familiar with the area to think someone may be turning right (eastbound) onto 118th north when actually they're continuing straight and create the same type of broadside scenario.
I personally feel a traffic circle/round-a-bout (similar to the circle in Alpine at the Alpine Hwy/Main St intersection) would be the best solution for the intersection as it would force the cars traveling north and south on the Highland Blvd to 1.) slow down as they approach the intersection w/ 11800 N and 2.) make the southbound turn from 11800 N (like the one Maylee and Christine were making) easier to enter in to. I also feel the speed limit should be lowered to 30 mph from the intersection, south to the Timpanogos Hwy. Of course, this is something for the City Council to ultimately discuss and resolve.
Please support this petition as we work on making sure we don't ever see this happen again.
