Dear Mr. Carter and the AD Hoc Committee for the State Street Food Cooperative,
Apologies for the delayed response. You happened to reach out right in the heart of budget season.
As we have discussed before, I support the effort to bring additional grocery stores to the community, but you need site control and an anchor tenant for a viable proposal. I am ready to help with city assistance should you be able to put such a package together.
When I first took office, the 3rd Ward was a food desert. Through hard work and building partnerships, I am proud to have located two new Marino's in our community (16th St. and Dearborn, Pershing Rd. and King Drive), and am in the middle of an effort to bring a Pete's Fresh Market to the corner of Pershing Rd. and State St. I know what it takes to develop grocery stores in our community.
I acknowledge that the residents of Dearborn Homes and the adjacent community need closer access to fresh produce, meat, and other grocery staples, not to mention the jobs a new store would create. That is why I'm asking for a location with site control and an anchor tenant to be part of your proposal. Because that is what works, and that is what can be moved forward with City officials. I truly hope you and your team can deliver. I stand ready to bring all city resources available to me to assist your development efforts.
