Show support for Jacksonville Animal Care & Protective Services
The Issue
Dear Mayor Curry,
This is in response to the anonymous letters that were recently sent regarding Animal Care and Protective Services. The letters allege that there has been mismanagement at the shelter, specifically naming both Nikki Harris and Jen Walter.
Since Ms Harris and Ms Walter have been at ACPS, there have been numerous positive changes, not only in the environment that the animals are housed in, but also in communications with the community, the partnership organizations and the volunteers. It is through the hard work and dedication of the staff at ACPS that Jacksonville has been able to achieve and maintain a live release rate above 90% (the requirement for no-kill status) since January of last year. The staff, including Ms Harris and Ms Walter, are leading the charge in what a successful animal shelter should be, and for that they certainly should be applauded.
We can give numerous examples of invalidity of the allegations letters. To specifically respond to the accusation that Ms Walter is happy to euthanize animals, all one would have to do is spend a few minutes talking to her to see how false that is.
Both Ms Harris and Ms Walter represent ACPS in a positive light and go above and beyond for the animals in their care. Many lives have been saved, and dogs and cats have been placed into homes, as a result of the positive changes made under their management.
The undersigned volunteers and community stand united behind Ms Harris and Ms Walter and are proud to support them publicly, without hiding behind anonymity.
Thank you,
ACPS volunteers, fosters and supporters
