Five Days & 3000+ Signatures - Keeping The Momentum

May 20, 2020 —

Good morning!

I hope you got the chance to enjoy the ActiveTO road closures on Lake Shore and Bayview during the long weekend. It was great to see so many people out finally able to practice physical distancing along some of the city’s busiest trails.

I would like to thank you for joining more than 3000 people in supporting bike lanes on Bloor, Danforth, and Yonge. While the petition may be only five days old, the momentum to create space for people who walk and bike in Toronto has been building for the past two months. The recent ActiveTO installations wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work done by Torontonians like you.

With the next Toronto city council meeting scheduled for next Thursday – which could see the Bloor bike lane extension to Runnymede being debated – I have a few actions for you.

  1. Keep sharing this petition with other Toronto residents. Let’s aim for 5000 signatures by May 28. Maybe even 10,000?
  2. If you represent a community organization that wants to sign on last week’s open letter this petition is based on, please e-mail me at robert.zaichkowski@yahoo.ca.
  3. E-mail Mayor Tory (mayor_tory@toronto.ca) and City Council (councilmeeting@toronto.ca) to show your support for ActiveTO and for building bike lanes on Bloor, Danforth, and Yonge. Making your story personal is strongly encouraged; especially if you enjoyed the ActiveTO closures. If you are subscribed to Cycle Toronto's e-mails, they sent an action alert yesterday with a sample message and suggest you CC info@cycleto.ca and active_to@toronto.ca with your e-mail to Mayor Tory and City Council.
  4. You can also show your support through the David Suzuki Foundation’s e-mail campaigns which specifically focus on Bloor and Danforth.
