Hello friends,
Right now, America and the world are rocked by protests demanding justice and in defense of Black lives, and already those protests, and actions people are taking across the country are making history. Here’s how your signature on Kellen’s petition, Justice for George Floyd, is helping drive change:
After video surfaced of George Floyd’s murder surfaced, your signature joined with millions of others, and people taking action on the ground, to let Minneapolis know that the world was watching. As you know, all four officers involved in Floyd’s murder have been charged. Derek Chauvin has been charged with second degree murder, third degree murder and manslaughter. The other three officers were charged with aiding and abetting second degree murder, and aiding and abetting manslaughter. While Kellen, who started the petition, sees a long road ahead, these are significant steps forward on the journey to justice.
The story of this petition, with your name to it, has made news in Newsweek, Seventeen Magazine, Rolling Stone, and People Magazine. Influencers like Beyoncé and Ariana Grande joined you in spreading the petition all over social media.
In an article for National Geographic, Phillip Morris writes: “A 15-year-old Portland, Oregon, girl named Kellen S. created a Change.org petition called Justice For George Floyd that became the most signed petition in Change.org’s history, with now more than 16 million signatures. Kellen said in an interview that she realized the daunting challenge for people her age to become social leaders in times of great social upheaval and crisis. Her age was actually the asset. She recognized that social media would be the most effective tool to reach teens and spread awareness about police brutality and racism. Now, she has become a sterling example of how young leadership can foment and foster change.”
Your signing, sharing, commenting and sharing again have made this petition the biggest of all time, worldwide, with more than 16 million signatures and growing. Some of you also chipped in to promote Kellen’s petition, so Change.org has promoted this petition to more than one million people a day on our site, in emails to more than 20 million people, in ads across social media that reach 10 million or more each day, and in more than 100 billboards across New York City and Minneapolis.
And there is so much more you can do.
Breonna Taylor was murdered in an illegal drug raid on her house — despite the true suspect living across town and already being held in police custody. Breonna would have been 27 just days ago on Friday. Lorelei started a petition calling for Justice for Breonna Taylor that now has more than five million signatures. Sign here if you haven’t already.
Cece started a petition to free death row inmate Julius Jones, who she believes is innocent. Join millions in calling for Julius to be spared from the death penalty. Sign the petition here to get updates from Cece on what's happening next.
Or find some of the other powerful petitions advocating for racial justice and an end to police violence here.
Thank you for everything you do.
