Thanks to your action, we did it again! On Tuesday night the San Mateo City Council voted 3-2 in favor of installing 2+ miles of bike lanes on Humboldt and Poplar, next to San Mateo High and College Park Elementary Schools. This is another important step in improving the safety of our streets and getting more kids to bike (and walk) to school instead of arriving by automobile.
We couldn't have done this without your help. This was a very hotly debated project as it required repurposing 200+ public parking spots to make room for the bike lanes. Given your emails, public comments, letters to the editor, and newspaper op-eds, we made it apparent to the Council that a majority of San Mateo (and neighboring) residents want safer streets and more active transportation, especially around our schools. Please take a minute to shoot a quick thank you email to the following City Councilmembers who voted in favor of the bike lanes:
- Mayor Rick Bonilla - rbonilla@cityofsanmateo.org
- Councilmember Eric Rodriguez - erodriguez@cityofsanmateo.org
- Councilmember Joe Goethals - jgoethals@cityofsanmateo.org
The new bike lanes should be installed within a month or two so start tuning up those bikes! Thanks again for your support. We couldn't have done it without you. : )
