Deny Orcem Cement Mill Permit/Project to keep our community free of Soot, Dust, & Traffic
The Issue
We urge the City of Vallejo to deny the Permit and Project for the ORCEM Cement Mill. We, the undersigned residents of Saint Vincent’s Hill, submit this letter of concern and protest in regards to the Vallejo Marine Terminal and Orcem Cement Mill.
As stated in our letter, the following issues worry us as a community:
- Project will locate a heavy industrial use in a residential neighborhood
- Orcem Cement Factory would only provide 20-30 jobs with VMT only providing 20-40 jobs
- Only 360,000 dollars in revenue to the city per year
- 77 car trains will block intersections and railway crossings throughout town, increasing impacts on traffic and emergency services
- The project would emit 15.9 tons of dust and soot per year
- Diesel from trucks and ships would produce annual emissions calculated at 63 tons of smog-producing NOx, 24 tons of carbon monoxide, and 31,000 tons of CO2. Diesel emissions cause asthma, heart problems, and cancer.
- As many as 295 trucks would drive roundtrip around the clock along Sonoma Boulevard, Curtola Parkway and residential Lemon Street to and from the facility
- In a time of drought throughout California, the project will use 46,000 gallons of water every day by the Orcem Cement Factory to control dust
