Hi everyone, My name is Adam Harnett, and I’m a resident of Orlando who, like millions of others, has been deeply impacted by the tragedy that took place at Pulse Nightclub on June 12. Part of this is because I’m gay and was one decision away from going to Pulse that night; the other part is that I care very much about the safety of everyone in my city and my home state of Florida. This is precisely why I signed Dylan’s petition calling on lawmakers to work together to prohibit high-powered weapons from being owned in my city and across my state. Having heard politicians send their “thoughts and prayers” too many times to count, enough is enough, as Dylan said. The time is now for our representatives to listen to our voices. Over the last month, I’ve been working with Dylan on his petition, but given scheduling conflicts that won’t allow him to give it the attention he thinks it deserves, he’s kindly agreed to let me take ownership of it. Many thanks to him for his hard work and deep desire to make the world a better place. It hasn’t gone unnoticed; our signatures prove that. Because of his work, Mayor Dyer responded directly to his petition. And while local governments are forbidden from regulating firearms, according to Dyer, he has agreed to meet with me in two weeks to talk about the issue of gun safety and how he might be able to help affect change. You’ll also see that the petition is now directed to Representative Patrick Murphy, who’s been outspoken about the need for stronger gun safety legislation. I’ve also invited him to join me at the meeting with the mayor, so I’ll update you if he’s able to attend. Thank you so much for your continued support of Dylan’s campaign. I know he appreciates it immensely, and I know your encouragement will prove invaluable as we continue to press our lawmakers to keep us and those we love safe. What we can’t do is give up; our lives depend on it. Look up for more updates! Peace, Adam
