Pono Power Coalition started this petition to Greg Shimukawa and

“Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono”
The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness

We are a group of concerned citizens of south Maui, who are in favor of clean and green electrical energy for our island.

We stand for respecting, preserving and protecting cultural and environmental diversity and integrity on Maui.

However, utility-scale power plants should be located in already existing industrial zones, far away from sacred Hawai'ian heiau, scarce agricultural land, and quiet, peaceful rural residential neighborhoods on Maui.

We Oppose the Proposed Industrial Paeahu Solar Power Plant located adjacent to Maui Meadows rural residential neighborhood.

We want Maui Electric Company to cease negotiating with the proponent, Innergex immediately.

Below are a few of the detrimental Impacts of this proposed solar power plant that would adversely impact our quality of life.

  1. Destruction of 200 acres of agricultural land and diverse wildlife habitat, including 2 animals and 9 plants listed as Endangered Species.
  2. Desecration of culturally sacred sites and graves.
  3. Increase in noise and danger from commercial vehicles using Maui Meadows neighborhood roads to access the proposed site as well as ongoing operations and maintenance.
  4. Increased flash floods and brown water runoff from 200  acres of denuded land, plus herbicides (Roundup?) used on site to control vegetation growth, will pollute neighbors’ properties, the ocean, and already impaired reefs.
  5. Carbon emissions will increase due to loss of carbon sequestering vegetation on 200 acres.
  6. 4 - 5% temperature increase in ambient temperatures due to 49,000 PV panels, disturbing rainfall, and local climate.
  7. Constant noise from motorized trackers and inverters as well as wind howling through the PV panels.
  8. Increased dust on adjacent properties from denuded land.
  9. Destruction of culturally valuable viewscapes.
  10. Night glare from bright security lights interfering with valuable dark night skies.
  11.  Decrease in property value of homes in Maui Meadows as well as those homes east from the proposed site.
  12. Decrease in home prices will lead to decrease in assessed property values which will deplete the amount of taxes received by County Maui.
  13. If built this would set a dangerous precedent for locating huge solar fields adjacent to residential neighborhoods on Maui.

This land use proposal is not consistent with the surrounding quiet, peaceful, rural residential neighborhood of Maui Meadows, would cause undue harm to cultural and natural environments and should not be allowed to progress.

We are prepared to oppose this solar power proposal every step of the way.
